2084: Junk Puppet Theater
Produce an artsy, low-fi, junk puppet theatre video from a dystopian/utopian short story you've written inspired by Orwell's 1984. Use narration of the screenplay to guide a video based on an preliminary, research paper, that addresses a current issue. The objective is to imagine how that topic shapes our future world in the year 2084.
Pre-production:
Essential tasks before you begin shooting the video
Mood Boards: Use mood boards to visually illustrate the style they wish to pursue.
Environment - Identify
key settings of the story (where will each scene take place?)
Props - Identify key props from your story. Find images to inspire the look of your props.
Characters - Identify the key characters of your story. Create a mood board of each character featured in your story.

Sketching your story
Create a sketch of each character featured in your video
|
Create a sketch of each set you will use for your video

Create a sketch of each prop you will use in your video

Storyboarding
Sketch a series of scenes for each act of your play (as you would see in a comic strip). Write a piece of dialog or narration to accompany respective scenes. Consider the set, the characters, close-ups, action scenes, movement, lighting, etc. This should be a visual script and act as a shooting plan of the video project. |
|
Atmospheric perspective:
Give an atmospheric perspective demo. Have each student re-create a painting sample depicting proper atmospheric perspective with paint acrylic or watercolor on paper. |
|
Scenic painting:
Compose painted or drawn backdrops for different scenes. |
|
3D Construction:
Gather recyclable materials to use in the construction of your sets, props, and characters. Use the sketches and mood boards to guide the construction of your puppet theater elements. Create costumes for characters.

Other considerations:
Production
Be sure to take thoughtful, quality images so you have good material to work with. Think about lighting, perspective, close-ups, cuts, pace, etc. Make sure you keep it interesting.
Post-production
Add postproduction effects, titles and credits to finish the video
