The class of 2013 drew over 3000 images to create this illustrated music video. Josh Hassin, a mutual friend of Michael Andrews and myself did all the pre and post production of this collaborative project.

To provide more information about ourselves we included characteristics written sticky notes and applied them to our bodies.
From Trash to Treasure
We created a mock thrift store stocked with paper-mache curiosities.
Faces of Lit.
Students read an autobiography of their choice and created portraits with a collage from magazine.
Drawing Week Images Class of 2013
For one or two weeks, students had a number of drawing assignments to complete. The objective was to produce art that could be used as t-shirt art and to be an artistic component for projects happening in their core classes.
Pimp Your Pants Fashion Show
Adorn a pair of pants with art and create a shirt with a social message. We displayed this project to the school in the form of a fashion show.
Voter Info Night 2016
We created artwork of the political candidates and propositions designed to illustrate the platforms.

We designed and painted a mural for a community pre-school.
The Last Word
The seniors chose a last word they wanted to leave behind as they graduate high school.
A Picture worth 1000 Words
In collaboration with the humanities class, students wrote 1000 words to describe a work of art.

Art Historical Paintings Class of 2012
Each student was to choose a famous work of art and reproduce it as best as they could. These paintings hung outside the art room in a collaborative mural.
Berger Hardware Mural, North Park, San Diego
During the last two weeks of their senior year, the class of 2011 created a mural to bring to life the exterior facade of an old hardware store on 30th at University, in North Park. We consulted the business to design a composition that would illustrate some of the common sights of the era in which the business began, circa 1910. We spent about 3 hours a day, for 8 days, traveling to this location and painting on site.
Installation Art Project
To prepare for this project we toured an exhibit at the San DiegoMuseum of Contemporary Art. We were inspired by the work of Tara Donovan. Our objective was to conceive and create installation art from common materials. This project should have a strong visual impact, promote curiosity and cost a minimal amount or nothing at all...
Quotable Character Project
Each student was required to assume the persona of a quotable character. They were to use the quote as a prop for a self portrait that portrays the essence of this chosen character. Once the image was produced, each student had to paint a portrait of them self using the photograph as a reference.
HTHI Assemblage Mural
The putting together of random found objects to form one unified aesthetic that acts as a puzzle and only suggests hints of the subject will be the goal of this effort. The objective is to provide a description of the school in an abstract and unconventional manner. Just suggesting clues as to the subjects covered in the school wide curriculum should give enough of an impression as to what we are and what we teach and study at HTHI.
Smog Test Only Mural, Gaslamp District, San Diego
16 graduating seniors and myself designed and painted a mural on the wall of a smog certification shop in eight days for 2 hours a day in June of 2010. We borrowed some images from the internet and tried to make them our own. We owe some credit to the artist, Susan van Horn for the use of her inspirational imagery. The mural is located on the corner of 11th Ave. and G st. in Downtown, San Diego.
Lyrics and Melody Project-Sushi Gallery
Senior students were asked to create a painting on an old vinyl record. The objective was to illustrate an original song that the students composed in their music class. One side was supposed to represent the lyrics of their song the other side was to represent the melody of the song. I wanted them to understand the diffence between abstract art (melody) and representational art (lyrical). It was meant to appreciate mood and meaning and how each might be represented in art.
Wisdom Project
In collaboration with the senior humanities teacher, Stephanie Lytle, our students interviewed senior citizens, wrote transcripts of the interviews, derived poems from the transcripts and created paintings that illustrated the interview content. These paintings were given to the participating interviewees as offerings in turn for their wisdom.
Voices and Visions Project- Veterans Village
Independently, each student will make efforts to contact the non-profit organization of their choice and offer to donate a painting to decorate a specific location in their workplace. In conjunction with the humanities course we will develop a professional proposal letter that describes our intent. In the final weeks of the semester we will undertake the painting process. Each student should develop a relationship with a person in the organization and come to a mutual understanding of exactly what you are to produce in order to please the client. All paintings will be offered as donations to promote the beautification of their space and to support their cause, unless other arrangements are made. This project will be most meaningful if we chose a cause that we feel close to.
Indigenous Nature Project
Bringing the outdoors; indoors. This project requires that we study and survey the nature just outside our windows and bring it into our school commons in the form of large-scale theatrical style paintings.
Political Freak Show Rally Posters 2008
The format is a political campaign rally sign.
The design should mimic a carnival sideshow or freakshow aesthetic.
The objective is to create a humorous or satirical painting that conveys a political message
Shoe Paintings
It is my belief that one can tell something of a person's personality or character by the shoes they wear. For this project each student was to paint a portrait of the shoe they were wearing that day.
Admiration Mural
On paper and using only black acrylic paint, each student was to create a portrait of a person they admire. These paintings were created by digitally projecting the images onto the paper and learning how to form an image by locating the light and shadow portions to create the illusion of depth and dimension.
Defining Characteristic Awards
Based on the tradition of “found object” art, we will obtain a small scale object that has sculptural form to represent a personal achievement. With this self representational object we will create an award to our proudest moment, personal interest, defining characteristic, etc.
Girls Restroom Project
The females in one class were to find images that empower women to decorate the bare walls of the restroom. They were then required to paint these images and hang them on the restroom walls.
Under the Influence: Of Art...
The objective of this project was to relate two pieces of art that share a common characteristic, tofind an example of art that acted as a direct influence, anything that exhibits a relationship between the two, such as; style, color, composition, technique, subject, philosophy or expression.
Math Paintings 2010
Students were asked to produce a painting that illustrated a math formula or concept.
Contemporary Cave Painting
The intent of this project was to put a contemporary spin on the art of ancient cave painting. After reviewing cave imagery from around the globe, the students were asked to choose a subject to represent that could someday tell our story, as the ancient cave wall images tell of the societies who drew them. What do we hunt for and revere as a society?
Art/Engineering/Environmental Science Project
This project was a collaboration between these three disciplines. Each team of seniors were to develop a project that employed all three of their course subjects in one thoughful product. A wide range of projects were produced.
Family Portraits 2007
The requirement for this project was for each student to choose a family member and paint a portrait of them.
Text Art Project
Goal: Create interesting art regarding the use of text as image.
Inspiration: The 1960’s
Art Historical/Core Class, Self-Portrait
The idea of this project was to have students create an artistic self portrait using the style of an established artist and representing something they had learned in their core academic class.
Ecotopia Project
This project required that student's think ecologically while producing a model of an ecotopian environment. They were to consider three disciplines; art, engineering and evironmental science.
Ghosts of High Technology
Each student was to choose an outdated object that was once considered to be the height of high technology. They produced "pinata" type sculptures from paper mache that hung as a collection in the common space of HTHI.
Art Historical Timeline Project
These paintings exhibit the fundamental progression of the art of painting as practiced in the western civilization. Beginning with the Paleolithic, or cave painting period, this display works its way up the staircase, showing the development of art styles, philosophies and techniques through the ages. Each painting represents an example of the prevailing aesthetic of an historic period.
Boys Restroom Mural
To decorate the bare walls of the boys restroom, students were to contemplate male oriented imagery, in particular; war. Each student had a segment of wood that had to match up with the others to complete a unified backdrop and proceed to paint images of battle and war. This collaborative mural encircles the entire boys restroom.
Our Cultural Patchwork
To get a sense of the variety of cultures the student body is made of, each student painting some sort of paterned image that represented their cultural heritage. These items were hung as a collaborative patchwork.
Italian Renaissance Mural
After a school trip to Italy, I wanted to recreate the dramtic artwork that we experienced in Italy. The sophomore class painted the background drapery and the senior class painted objects from the renaissance to layer over the dramatic drapery. This mural is a collaboration between classes and grade levels.
Relics of Our Cultural Heritage
Each student was to choose a relic of their specific cultural descent. They then painted these relics and hung them as one collaborative mural in the school commons to represent the range of ethnic backgrounds of our student body.
Self Portrait Collage Paintings
Students collaged designs from art magazines on to portraits of interesting people. Then they proceeded to create a painting using the collage as referrence. The objective was to replicate the design as a painting.
Art Historical Loteria Cards
This project was intended to teach painting skills and familiarize students with aspects of art history. The goal was to recreate an object/subject from a famous painting of the student’s choice in the form of a Lotería card.
Super Hero/Alter Ego Project
Develop a creature with one superpower and one ultimate weakness. These characteristics should be based on a fantastic aspiration or desire and on the flip side, a personal shortcoming.
What aspect about yourself would you like to improve that might ultimately be the direct cause of your creature’s downfall and what distinct power would you like to possess that could possibly give you the power to excel?
Tears of Admiration
We painted our favorite musicians onto tear shaped wood panels. To compliment this concept, we also painted images of musicians we admire onto cloud shapes. The combination appeared to be clouds and raindrops,,,,all painted in monotone blue and green.
Social Political Poster Project 2005
In small teams, students researched a topic and designed a poster to illustrate the issue. These posters were painted in large scale by the students and hung on the walls of HTHI.
