Self Portrait
This is an example of a deconstruction of a portrait. The objective is to try to reduce the likeness to a simple graphic, line drawing, once you have created a successful shaded drawing in pencil.
Line Drawn Portrait Examples:
Drawing exercises
First, we will do sketchbook exercises where we copy facial features. I will provide images of mouths, noses, etc. and we will copy the drawing into our sketchbooks.
Photography
Set up a studio to take photographic portraits of each student. We will have a blank white background so our image will be isolated and easier to focus on as we recreate our portrait as a drawing in pencil.
Pencil Drawing
Using a photograph we will copy the image in pencil. I will encourage everyone to do a freehand approach but will show those who are not as confident how to create a tracing of the photograph in order to locate the features and then proceed freehand from there. Beyond getting the proportions correct, rendering the light and shadow will be the greatest challenge in order to artistically capture our image as a traditional pencil drawing.
Contour Line Drawing
Once the likeness is achieved we will work to simplify the pencil drawing by using tracing paper and pen. Lay the original pencil drawing under a sheet of tracing paper, and redraw the essential features that create your portrait. This stage should be done repeatedly until you get the right look. Once you have a simplified line drawing of yourself, reinforce it with Ink pen.
Scan, Manipulate and Save
Scan the line drawn portrayed and save in the student share. Use Photoshop to enhance or manipulate the line drawn portrait. Once completed, upload the image to your web portfolio on the index page or the “about me” page.
